Description
Forensic Medicine is a branch of medicine concerned with the application of medical knowledge to legal purposes and the administration of justice. It entails integrating basic and clinical medical sciences, as well as paramedical practices, to clarify legal and investigative issues. In contemporary usage, forensic medicine is closely aligned with legal medicine, notably in the context of criminal investigations involving homicide, sexual offenses, physical injuries, drug-related cases, and other similar violations of law. The scope of forensic medicine is extensive. Medical practitioners engaged in medico-legal functions are expected to possess adequate knowledge of pathology, surgery, gynecology, toxicology, odontology, and other medical disciplines relevant to the matters under investigation. Fundamentally, medico-legal experts are mandated to assist judicial authorities by providing professional opinions on issues of medico-legal significance in support of the administration of justice.
