Abstract
The traditional view of the family as the foundation of Filipino philosophy has been criticized for romanticizing its role in society and neglecting power conflicts and inequalities within it. A more nuanced understanding of the family's influence on Filipino thinking and values is needed. Work is viewed as a means of uplifting the family's socioeconomic status, but this can lead to nepotism and a focus on personal gain over productivity. Religion plays a significant role in shaping Filipino identity, but modern science and technology challenge the place of culture and tradition. Ramon Reyes' three sources of Filipino Thought - family, work, and religion - are dialectical in nature, with each source influencing and shaping the others in complex ways. Family represents communal values and loyalty, work embodies pragmatism and utilitarianism, and religion encompasses spiritual and moral dimensions. Conflicts and tensions can arise between these sources, leading to a reevaluation of values and priorities. The interplay between family, work, and religion reflects the diversity and richness of Filipino culture. This study suggests that exploring Filipino culture is critical, as it can foster a sense of cultural identity and belonging, cross-cultural appreciation and understanding, social and cultural empowerment, challenge dominant narratives and perspectives, and yield tangible benefits for both individuals and communities.
