Abstract

This study developed and evaluated English based Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) videos as instructional materials for senior high school students in the Municipality of Del Carmen, Surigao del Norte. Anchored on the ADDIE instructional design model, the study employed a developmental mixed method research design utilizing a one group pretest–posttest approach to examine learners’ level of awareness, interpreted as their understanding of messages conveyed through English, across three domains: basic general information, HIV prevention, and treatment, management, and care. A total of 380 senior high school students participated as primary respondents, while 10 English teachers provided qualitative insights on instructional use, and 4 expert validators evaluated the quality of the developed materials. Data were gathered using a researcher developed checklist and the Department of Education (DepEd) Evaluation Rating Sheet for Audio and Video Recordings, and were analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical tools. Findings revealed that learners initially demonstrated limited understanding of messages conveyed through English prior to exposure to the IEC English videos. After implementation, learners exhibited a clear improvement in understanding across all three domains, indicating that the IEC English videos effectively enhanced comprehension when English was used as a structured, multimodal medium of instruction. Differences based on age and grade level were not observed, while a difference based on sex was evident only in basic general information prior to implementation. The developed IEC English videos were rated Very Satisfactory in terms of content, format and technical design, presentation and organization, and accuracy and up to datedness of information. The study concludes that IEC English videos are effective language learning resources that support comprehension and meaning making through English while using socially relevant content as context. The findings highlight the strong potential of IEC English videos for integration in language education and school community instructional initiatives, particularly as non-literary, multimodal texts in senior high school English instruction.
