Description
Mathematical Modeling has always been a useful course in both theoretical and applied mathematics. For years, it has been employed to understand different processes in real-life situations. The models, in the form of equations, functions, or systems of equations, are created based on the different factors and beliefs about how our world functions. In mathematical modeling, we translate the relationships among the different factors into mathematical language (Lawson et al., 2008). One application of mathematical modeling is in operations research, which is often used to support decision-making (Tulchinsky et al., 2023). Moreover, one of the common topics involved in operations research is linear programming, which we use to find the best possible outcome given the objective and constraints. In this educational article, we examine the role of linear programming in a student’s life, with the variables, objective, and constraints defined. We specifically consider an ordinary Filipino student’s life, aiming to maximize success while accounting for the limitations commonly faced by students. By turning these real-life challenges into a mathematical framework, the study shows how students make the best possible decisions, even under constraints. The paper emphasizes the importance of mathematical modeling not just as a tool for calculation, but also as a means to understand social realities.
