Description
Chemistry is often described as the study of matter and the changes in matter, but what we know is that this description is far too simple to capture the richness and complexity that are the very essence of chemistry. It is not just a subset of science confined to laboratories or books; it actually explains almost everything we see around us in everyday life. It fills the foundation of life, the organization of ecosystems, and the amplifying machinery of the cosmos. When you get down to it, chemistry is the invisible string tying all of the different levels of reality with one another, from molecules to living organisms to the universe. This essay suggests that the importance of chemistry stems from its significance at three specific levels: organic chemistry as the foundation of life, the explanations of everyday natural phenomena and facts, and the material and human connections revealed through chemistry.
