Abstract
This study developed and evaluated the DinaGUIDE Manual, an English-Filipino-Bisaya training manual for Dinagatnon tour guides, in response to the communication challenges encountered in interacting with local and international tourists. Specifically, the study examined the tour guides’ language needs and difficulties in terms of grammatical accuracy, fluency and pronunciation, vocabulary adequacy, communication confidence, and discourse organization. Guided by the ADDIE Model, the study employed a developmental research design involving 22 tour guides from the Province of Dinagat Islands and 10 experts composed of tourism officers, a tourism professor, and English educators. Data were gathered using the Department of Education validation tool for print materials and an oral communication performance test with a rubric. Mean and standard deviation were used to describe the validity of the manual and the oral communication performance of the participants. Findings revealed that the Dinagatnon tour guides needed enhancement in grammar, fluency, and pronunciation, vocabulary, confidence, and discourse organization, which affected their ability to deliver clear and coherent tour interactions. In response, the DinaGUIDE Manual was designed as a contextualized, trilingual, user-friendly, and progressive instructional material that integrates basic grammar, fluency-building activities, tourism vocabulary, pronunciation drills, role-play exercises, and localized tour spiels. The manual obtained a “Very Satisfactory” validity rating in terms of content, format, presentation, organization, and accuracy and up-to-datedness of information. It was implemented through a seminar-workshop that provided guided practice, simulations, and performance-based activities. After the implementation, the tour guides demonstrated competent oral communication performance in grammatical accuracy, fluency, and pronunciation, and vocabulary adequacy, and proficient performance in communication confidence, indicating that the DinaGUIDE Manual contributed positively to the development of their tourism communication skills.
