Abstract
The study aimed to decrease self-injurious behaviors in an 11-year-old child diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Baseline data revealed the child's tendency to be non-responsive to materials present, verbal instructions, and praise. Various materials, such as baskets, eggs, clothespins, and nuts and bolts, were used, employing both full physical and partial prompts, as well as conditioned motivating operations (CMO), to decrease self-injurious behaviors. The outcomes indicated that the child could perform tasks but still required time and effort to do so consistently, especially across different activities and with changes in therapists during the intervention. Moreover, fluctuations in the numbers of correct and incorrect responses appear to be associated with both the frequency of daily activities and the approaches therapists use when working with the child. Further research is needed to understand better the effectiveness of reinforcement strategies in reducing self-injurious and other problem behaviors in children with ASD.
