Abstract

This study developed, implemented, and evaluated contextualized tourism brochures as instructional materials for teaching Creative Writing among 23 Grade 11 General Academic Strand students at Siargao Island Institute of Technology during the second semester of School Year 2025–2026. Using a descriptive-developmental approach integrated with a one-group quasi-experimental pre-test–post-test design, the study assessed learners' creative writing skills in imagery, diction, figures of speech, and variations on language. Three tourism brochures featuring Sugba Lagoon, Magpupungko Rock Pools, and Catangnan Bridge were developed through the ADDIE Model and collectively titled Siargao Awaits You . The brochures were systematically integrated into the motivation, recall, lesson proper, analysis, abstraction, application, and evaluation phases of Creative Writing instruction. A researcher-developed writing task and analytic rubric were used to measure students' performance, while the Department of Education Evaluation Rating Sheet for Print Resources was employed to determine the brochures' acceptability. Results showed that the learners' overall creative writing performance improved from Developing in the pre-test (M = 1.93, SD = 0.58) to Proficient in the post-test (M = 3.19, SD = 0.55). Significant improvements were recorded in imagery, diction, figures of speech, and variations on language, with Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test results yielding p-values below .001. The brochures were rated Very Satisfactory in content (M = 3.86), format (M = 3.98), presentation and organization (M = 3.73), and accuracy and up-to-dateness of information (M = 3.83). The findings indicate that brochure-based instruction was associated with meaningful improvements in students' creative writing skills. Evaluators recommended incorporating richer local cultural practices and character traits and producing the brochures in a larger A3 format to improve authenticity, readability, and learner engagement.
