Video Materials in Teaching Basic Surigaonon Expressions among Tourists in Siargao

Abstract
This study focused on the development of Surigaonon-based video instructional materials intended for tourists in Siargao Island. It aimed to promote basic Surigaonon language learning by identifying commonly used expressions in tourist interactions and integrating these into culturally relevant video lessons. The study highlights the importance of making local language accessible to tourists to enhance communication, cultural appreciation, and meaningful engagement with the local community. The study employed a developmental research design with a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative thematic analysis and quantitative evaluation. The development process followed six phases: needs analysis, material development, validation of appropriateness, expert evaluation, thematic analysis, and identification of improvements. Data were gathered from twenty (20) tourist participants through a structured interview guide to identify commonly used Surigaonon expressions in real tourist situations. In addition, three (3) expert validators assessed the developed video materials using a qualitative evaluation guide focusing on cultural relevance, creativity, attractiveness, and instructional effectiveness. Quantitative ratings were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to evaluate instructional quality. Findings revealed that the most appropriate Surigaonon expressions for tourist communication include greetings and introductions, directions and transportation, and expressions for commercial transactions, with additional expressions related to hospitality, conversational starters, and emergencies. The identified expressions were considered appropriate based on their practical usefulness, contextual relevance, and cultural significance in real-life tourist interactions. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that Surigaonon-based video instructional materials are effective tools for promoting basic language learning among tourists when grounded in authentic communication needs and cultural context. The integration of real-life expressions, visual storytelling, and context-based scenarios enhances learner engagement and cultural understanding. However, improvements in interactivity, multimedia features, and content expansion are recommended to further enhance instructional effectiveness and learner experience.
