Description
Reading is a fundamental skill that supports learning across all subject areas. However, some Grade 5 pupils experience difficulties in word recognition, reading fluency, and reading comprehension, which may affect their classroom participation, academic performance, and confidence. This action research aimed to determine the effectiveness of Project APIR (Assisting Pupils with Intervention in Reading) in improving the reading skills of struggling readers in Grade 5–Lucas at North Bay Boulevard North Elementary School during School Year 2025–2026. The identified struggling readers were assessed through a pre-test to determine their initial reading performance. The intervention included structured and targeted activities such as guided reading, phonics-based exercises, and reading comprehension activities suited to the pupils' identified needs.
